Syserco has been delivering Building Automation and Energy Management solutions to the Oakland Unified School District for over 15 years. This partnership has produced significant operational cost reduction for the District and has helped to further the District’s goal of educational excellence. Most recently, the District faced challenges resulting from its inefficient and low quality lighting systems in classrooms. These antiquated systems also had campus interior and exterior lights operating during evenings and weekends, causing excessive utility bills and community complaints.
As a long-term, trusted partner the District turned to Syserco to develop and implement a self-funded project using on-bill financing to address the District’s energy efficiency and infrastructure needs.
Three unique campuses participated in this energy project; ranging from basic classroom and administrative “wing structures”, to large gyms and auditoriums, to modular classrooms. The lighting systems in these facilities ranged from T12 to T8, with multiple lighting control methodologies.
Syserco’s solution included high efficiency LED lighting, micro-zone lighting control, and the upgrade of multiple stand-alone legacy lighting controls into a single integrated system. The energy conservation and efficiency accomplishments of the project were shared with the school community via Web-accessible energy dashboards.
The completed energy efficiency and infrastructure improvement project leveraged third-party on bill financing to improve the learning environment in 109 classrooms while delivering over $69,000 of energy cost avoidance per year to the District General Fund.
